Effective Medium Theory for Embedded Obstacles in Elasticity with Applications to Inverse Problems

نویسندگان

چکیده

We consider the time-harmonic elastic wave scattering from a general (possibly anisotropic) inhomogeneous medium with an embedded impenetrable obstacle. show that obstacle can be effectively approximated by isotropic particular choice of material parameters. derive sharp estimates to rigorously verify such effective approximation. Our study is strongly motivated related studies two challenging inverse problems including boundary problem partial data and recovering mediums buried obstacles. The proposed theory readily yields some interesting applications practical significance these problems.

Polarization and Moments Tensors with Applications to Inverse Problems and Effective Medium Theory

This book addresses significant recent developments in mathematical analysis and computational methods in impedance imaging and the theory of composite materials. It grows out of a desire to foster communication between these exciting fields. The mathematical problems that appear in these fields are of practical importance and pose high challenges to pure and applied mathematicians. They have a...

Inverse problems in elasticity

This article is devoted to some inverse problems arising in the context of linear elasticity, namely the identification of distributions of elastic moduli, model parameters, or buried objects such as cracks. These inverse problems are considered mainly for threedimensional elastic media under equilibrium or dynamical conditions, and also for thin elastic plates. The main goal is to overview som...

ON MAXWELL'S STRESS FUNCTIONS FOR SOLVING THREE DIMENSIONAL ELASTICITY PROBLEMS IN THE THEORY OF ELASTICITY

The governing equations of three dimensional elasticity problems include the six Beltrami-Michell stress compatibility equations, the three differential equations of equilibrium, and the six material constitutive relations; and these are usually solved subject to the boundary conditions. The system of fifteen differential equations is usually difficult to solve, and simplified methods are usual...

Inverse Problems for Obstacles in a Waveguide ∗

In this paper we prove that a particular entry in the scattering matrix, if known for all energies, determines certain rotationally symmetric obstacles in a generalized waveguide. The generalized waveguide X can be of any dimension and we allow either Dirichlet or Neumann boundary conditions on the boundary of the obstacle and on ∂X. In the case of a two-dimensional waveguide, two particular en...

Unique Continuation for the Two-dimensional Anisotropic Elasticity System and Its Applications to Inverse Problems

Under some generic assumptions we prove the unique continuation property for the two-dimensional inhomogeneous anisotropic elasticity system. Having established the unique continuation property, we then investigate the inverse problem of reconstructing the inclusion or cavity embedded in a plane elastic body with inhomogeneous anisotropic medium by infinitely many localized boundary measurements.
